A view of Frenchmans Bay near Cadillac Mountain

Some of the beautiful seashore

Thursday September 11, 2K8

Have to start by remembering the date. Last year we were at Mt. Rushmore, remember that Margy?

Stopped in Camden for some great shopping, small town with great little shops but bigger things waited. We were off to Freeport, Maine to the LLBean store. Got there around noon..it was like walking into a life size catolog. Shopped around, even did some shopping for Homeschooler Donovan. Apparently she needed a new rain jacket for our up coming mointain trip.
Left Freeport and went to Portlan Maine where Maines oldest Light house is. The lighthouse had one of those huge Amerian flags flying at half mast reminded me of the date.

Leaving Portland we deceide since we were only 7 hours from home, we would make a run for it. With several stops we got home around 2 AM, Oscar was happy to see us and it is nice to be home.

It was a great trip,

Packed up out gear and headed out to one last island....Isle au Haut. Pronounced "I'll-a-Ho". It is has a tiny village and Duck Island, part of the National Park is there. The only way in is by boat. Abpoy 80 people live there and they depend on the mail boat which makes two trips a day for supplies. We took the boat over and we accompied a pile of wood for construction, two rose bushes and a huge green box of supplies for the only general store in town.
Explored Stonington while waiting for the boat. Hiked a glacier trail and an old quarry. This quarry claim to fame is it where the stone came from for JFK grave. All very interesting and the boat trip was awesome.
Boat docked back in Stonington around 6 PM and headed toward home. Spent the night just outside Camden, Maine.

Today was cloudy and overcast but not cold. Went to the southwest harbor of Mount Desert Island to Seal Harbor, Tremont and Bernard.
More beautiful coast line. Went to two different light houses. There seems to be so many of them, the coast being so rocky and rought. These little villages, have only a gas station/convient store and not very big ones at that. The last town we went thru, Bernard is a great little village and very very rustic. Two restaurants, a ferry boat dock and thats it. Maybe ten houses in all BUT the greatest restaurant of all times IF you like lobster. It is called Thurston's Lobster Pound. It has a double decker dining room, bright yellow awnings and did I mention rustic! Out door bathrooms but they do have running water and flush toliets.
Anyway you go inside and go up to the counter, order your lobster by weight, the little ole lady reaches into this big tub of ice cold water (this is in between you and her) and pulls out the lobster of your choice. She then puts ina mesh type bag with a slip of paper with your name on it, walks it out the back door and puts in a large wood fired tub with boiling water. When the time is up, someone yells out your name and you pick it up, take it back to your table and enjoy your you lobster and it only cost around $20...but it was soooo good. That is 20 bucks for the lobster, no side dishes just lobster but it does fill you up. Art doesn't understand how I can eat something that you pull from the bottom of the sea but I have not had lobster in 15 years and like I said it was soooo good.
While you are dining you watch the lobster boats come in, empty themselves of lobster and head back out to check their traps. Not a great life style but I appreciated it.
Did some shopping in Bar Harbor and then headed back to camp before dark but not before the rain started...wet again but a good nights sleep on my air mattress. Packing up in the morning and taking our time going home.

Monday September 8

Had some computer problems while still at the motel, took a while to get service back. We are in a remote area and when I asked at a grocery store where to get help with my computer, I was told to go to Walmart!!! Turns out I guess I had a major screen freeze, which wouldn't let me even power down. Hopefully things are back to norm, but I might have fried the battery..we will see!

Finally everything is dried out and we are back in camp. Beautiful sunny day with bright blue skiies. After checking out the camp site, we deceide to take a road trip. Acadia NP is not all in one area but part of four different peninsulas. Our camp site is at Mount Desert, which is the largest one near Bar Harbor.

We went to the Schoodic Peninsula today, have to drive a few miles or take a ferry, Art wanted to drive, of course! A very pretty drive, once you figure the direction you want to go. You drive thru these very small fishung villages, the drive is along the sure, where you spot the lobster fisherman checking their traps, see beautiful old lighthouse and awesome coatal sights.

We stopped at Schoodic Point where you can sit and watch and hear the surf crashing against giant pink granite rocks. People sit here for hours, reading, sketching, painting and soaking up the sun. A great place to just relax. Drove around the loop and then headed back to camp. Stopping to get some groceries, yes I actually am going to cook tonight!

Back to camp around 6 PM, did some reading, fixed dinner and had a camp fire. Evenings are a bit cool. It is our first night sleeping in the tent!
